Football Activities in Madrid

For a true football fan, Madrid is one of the best cities in the world to visit. Of course, a trip to Madrid often revolves around watching a Real Madrid match, but the city offers many more opportunities to make your football experience complete.

During my many visits to Madrid, I always try to discover more than just the Santiago Bernabéu. From stadium tours and matches involving other Madrid clubs to unique football shops and museums, there are plenty of places that every football fan should visit.

On this page, I share my personal recommendations and experiences so you can make the most of your football trip to Madrid.

Santiago Bernabéu Tour

Visiting Madrid for the first time? Then a tour of the Santiago Bernabéu is an absolute must. During the stadium tour, you’ll get a unique behind-the-scenes look at one of the world’s most iconic football stadiums. You’ll visit the trophy room with its 15 Champions League trophies, different areas of the stadium and the iconic dugout. My advice is to book your tickets online in advance. This helps you avoid long queues and get the most out of your visit.

Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano

Besides the first team, Real Madrid also have Real Madrid Castilla and Real Madrid Femenino. Both teams play their home matches at the Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano at the club’s training complex. Tickets are easily available through the official Real Madrid website. It’s also a great opportunity to spot first-team players or other familiar faces from the club in the stands.

Real Madrid Basketball

Many people don’t realise that Real Madrid have also been among the very best basketball teams in Europe for many years. Watching a Real Madrid Baloncesto home game at the Movistar Arena is therefore a great experience. Even if you don’t normally follow basketball, the atmosphere is excellent and the games are often spectacular. Tickets are easily available through the official Real Madrid website.

Rayo Vallecano

Madrid is home to several professional football clubs, and Rayo Vallecano is without a doubt my favourite after Real Madrid. The club from the working-class neighbourhood of Vallecas is known for its passionate supporters and authentic football culture. Whenever Rayo are playing at home during my stay, I always try to attend. The atmosphere is fantastic and completely different from what you’ll experience at the Santiago Bernabéu. Keep in mind that tickets are usually only available from the stadium’s ticket office.

Getafe

Getafe CF are known as one of the most competitive clubs in Spain. Their style of play makes the club popular among its own supporters and a difficult opponent for many teams. The stadium is located slightly outside central Madrid, but it is easy to reach by public transport. Are you a true stadium enthusiast? Then a visit to Getafe is a great addition to your football weekend in Madrid.

Yo-Fútbol

Within walking distance of Plaza Mayor, you’ll find Yo-Fútbol, a small shop dedicated entirely to Spanish football. You’ll find shirts, scarves and other football merchandise from almost every Spanish club. One tip from personal experience: the opening hours aren’t always predictable. If the shop is open, it’s definitely worth a visit.

Legends – The Home of Football

Legends – The Home of Football is a modern football museum in the centre of Madrid. Alongside an impressive collection of football memorabilia, you’ll find historic shirts, unique trophies and an extensive fan shop. For any football fan, it’s a great place to spend a few hours.
